CADET BRIDGING PROGRAM FOR RATINGS BECOMING OFFICERS

jpeg18 Cadets with Training & Project Manager Capt Mika Appel are now at IDESS for the Bridging Program which will finally make them into officers after finishing on-board training.

Many companies have ratings who have Bachelor of Science in Navigation or Maritime Engineering working on-board as ratings.

One company wanted to do something with this and after a selection process, they selected 18 former ratings to undergo a Bridging Program at IDESS.

The Cadet Bridging Program is 10 weeks and will lead to an officer position on-board. Many ratings have a BS in Navigation or Maritime Engineering and want to have the chance to become officers.

This was the situation with the 18 former ratings (now Cadets) who arrived at IDESS some weeks ago.

After being selected from the company’s pool of rating with the correct education, they were assessed and tested at IDESS. After the program they will again be assessed, to measure “before-and-after” results.

The program consists of:

Ship Safety Officer

Company IN-HOUSE Training

Passage Planning

Ship-handling

Code of Conduct

Housekeeping and Sanitation Policy

ECDIS

Maritime Resource Management

Collision Avoidance

Stability

Navigation

The Cadets stay in IDESS Dormitory and have week-end tasks, teambuilding activities as well as company specific seminars. Focus is also on motivation, stress-management and discipline.

This program is very motivating, not only for the Cadets involved, but also for those other ratings seeing that their company is willing to invest in them. Good for retention and a Happy Ship feeling!
